MacBook Air M2 vs MacBook Neo: Which Mac Should You Actually Buy in 2026?
The new MacBook Neo has caused quite a stir since its UK launch in March 2026 — Apple's most affordable Mac ever, with prices starting from around £599. It's colourful, it's fresh, and it's tempting.
But is it actually a better buy than a well-specced MacBook Air M2 from us? In our case specifically: the 13.6" MacBook Air M2 with 16GB RAM and a 1TB SSD in Midnight. Let's dig into the real-world differences.

Where the MacBook Air M2 wins
Significantly more power. The M2 is a proper Mac-grade chip with double the GPU cores and a more capable CPU layout. The A18 Pro is impressive for an iPhone chip and edges out the older M1, but the M2 still outperforms it on sustained workloads — particularly anything graphics-heavy, multi-tasking with lots of tabs and apps, or creative work.
Double the RAM, and it matters. 16GB vs 8GB is a huge gap. Like all Apple Silicon Macs, the RAM is soldered in at the factory and can't be upgraded later — so the amount you buy with is the amount you'll have for the life of the machine. If you're running multiple apps, browser tabs, photo or video editing software, or anything beyond light use, 16GB feels dramatically more comfortable — and it'll keep feeling that way for years.
Four times the storage. 1TB vs 256GB. No contest if you've got a serious photo library, videos, design files, or you'd rather not faff about with cloud storage.
A better display for creative work. The Air's P3 wide colour gamut and True Tone make a genuine difference for photo editing, design, and anything where colour accuracy matters. The Neo's sRGB-only screen is fine for everyday use, but limited if you do creative work.
Proper ports and charging. Two Thunderbolt ports (brilliant for external displays, fast SSDs, docks), MagSafe charging that doesn't tie up a USB port, and fast charging support. The Neo has one fast USB port plus a USB 2.0 port — and slow 20W charging only.
Longer battery life. 18 hours versus 16.
Where the MacBook Neo wins
Price. It's cheaper new at retail, and that's the headline. If budget is the deciding factor and your needs are modest, the Neo delivers a genuine Mac experience at a remarkable entry point.
Fresh colours. Silver, Blush, Citrus, and Indigo — fun, and the Air doesn't offer anything quite as playful.
Brand new model. It's the latest release, fresh off the production line.
Who's the MacBook Air M2 for?
Honestly, almost anyone who needs to do more than browse, stream, and write the odd document. Students tackling demanding software, professionals, creatives, developers, anyone planning to keep their Mac for five years or more, or anyone who just wants a noticeably more capable machine. The 16GB / 1TB configuration we stock is genuinely future-proof and outclasses the Neo on nearly every spec that matters once you push the machine.
Who's the MacBook Neo for?
Light users, children, students on a tight budget, anyone who mainly browses and lives in iCloud, or someone wanting a colourful second machine for around the house.
The bottom line
The MacBook Neo is a brilliant entry point to the Mac world — but that's exactly what it is: entry-level. The MacBook Air 13" M2 with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD is a serious step up in performance, memory, storage, display quality, and connectivity. For anyone who needs real productivity headroom, this Air remains the smarter long-term buy — and from us, at a price that makes it even more compelling.
